Tenyo Devil Handkerchief
2010

Examinable : No / Non

Quality and finish : Very good / Très bonne

Only in Japan / Seulement au Japon

English:
This handkerchief can make appearing, disappearing, restoration, changing items.
1-There are about a dozen slips of paper with the names of famous cities written on them: London, Paris, New York, Tokyo, Singapore, etc... Magician wraps them up in the handkerchief and has the audience reach in and pull out whichever slip they like. The magician then tells them exactly which city they have chosen before they even open the paper.
2- (Advanced Effect by Scotty York)
Have the audience choose one card from a deck and remember it. The card is returned to the deck, the deck is shuffled well, and the deck is returned to the card case. The card case and a knife are wrapped together in the handkerchief. The magician shakes the handkerchief. He retrieves the card case and knife from the handkerchief. He opens the card case and, amazingly, every card in the deck has been cut in half except for one -- the one the audience chose!

Many effects can be performed with this handkerchief! In addition to basic effects, the advanced routines are also explained. As this item is made by TENYO, this Handkerchief is super high quality and nice design. Handkerchief Dimensions Approximately 17" x 17" (44cm x 44cm)
Description from Seo-magic-usa.com.

Slowly you push the silk INTO the center of the mirror!! The silk is IN the mirror and hanging downward. Give the silk a push and it slowly MELTS into the mirror!  Penetration magics by using glass or a mirror can produce illusive atmosphere, and they are thought as tricks with full of visual sensation. To our regret, however, we could not find any device of sufficiently good and durable workmanship for daily use. Some were too tawdry, others were heavy, or too large and not easy to handle. Mikame Craft has made Magic Mirror particularly wedded to its design, weight, and impression of handling. This device can also be applied daily as a wall hanging. DimensionsApproximately: 22 inches (Tall) x 18 inches (Wide). This item box is crafted by Mikame and marketed by Tenyo for Japan.

Tenyo T-177 Phantoma

Examinable : Yes / Oui

Effect : 8/10
Design : 7/10 (house) - 10/10 (silk)
Quality and finish : Very good / Très bonne

English:
A mysterious spook seems to inhabit a small haunted house. Even though the house is obviously empty, suddenly, when you shake it, an object can be heard inside rattling around: it is Phantoma, the house ghost! Dump the ghost into an empty handkerchief and the form of the ghost can be seen trying to get out. The ghost vanishes from the hanky and comes back to the house where he can be heard again. Immediately hand the haunted house out to your audience, but they can find no trace of the spirit visitor.

Development story:
The classic "Haunted Hank" gets a great reaction, and has continued to sell well for many, many years. We have always wanted to develop this into a Tenyo product. We did not want to release this trick as-is, but rather we desired to add something that would increase the impact it has upon the audience. We continued our consideration of this trick, but realized that the "Haunted Hank" gimmick is so complete that it leaves virtually no room for improvements. The only thing left to do was to combine this gimmick with another item. Tomoyuki Shimomura eventually hit upon the idea of sound to really sell the "ghost" presentation. Then, he took a hint from the "rattle box" gimmick used in coin magic, to complete the development of PHANTOMA.

Tips:
As you can see it is possible to customize the violet Phantoma House to give it a look more beautiful and mysterious. The Phantoma House in the two photos below has been hand painted by Marlowe a collector who is clearly also an artist. He told me that the secret is the brush size ! I think the real secret is his talent! This sublime painted Phantoma is probably the most successful customization I've seen to date.

A borrowed hanky and a piece of paper is placed between two plastic plates. The plates have a hole going through them and a plastic stick is thrust through the hanky and paper. When the hanky and paper are removed from between the plates, it is seen that the paper has a hole in it but the hanky is SOLID!

Trivia:
The renaming of this trick between the Japanese version and the western version may have been determined by the existence of a company in the Canary Islands (Spain) with the name "Hanky Panky" and manufacturer of small magic tricks to children.

English:
This magic released in the "best magician's selection" collection and named "Super balloon" allows to present a routine in three part using a balloon. Inside the beautiful box found balloons, a long needle, a green scarf and a gimmick. The complete routine allows to make appear and materialize a scarf which appears inside of the transparent balloon. Now magician shows the famous needle-through-balloon effect. In order to remove the scarf, the magician pierces the clear balloon with a stainless steel needle. But the balloon does not pop!  Once the balloon, with the scarf inside, is pierced from side to side the magician does not know how to get the scarf. It is exactly at that moment that the balloon explodes suddenly without explanation and the scarf fall and sits on the needle !

History:
There are numerous ways, very different, that allow to perform this kind of magic. First published as "No Bop Balloon" ( A visible penetration at only one point) by Canadian Tom Ransom in New Phoenix No. 312 (July 23, 1954). Hideo Kato explained on the Magic Cafe Forum that Mr.Ransom mentioned the use of Scotch Tape, but he used tape to shut the hole after removing the needle. He did not push needle thru tape. Later a two-point, entry-and-exit version, was being marketed as "The Pincushion Balloons" by 1956. A third trick named"Super Needled Balloon" was created by Boretti from Germany. Imported, manufactured and marketed in the US by Accent Products this version included a length of ribbon or yarn attached to the needle that also penetrated the balloon. Doug Henning made the trick popular after performing the illusion on one of his television specials in 1981. (source: Magicpedia - Magic Café Forum)

Trivia:
In 1978 Tenyo had already marketed a Spike through Balloon effect using a tube for cover and where a balloon is pierced by two spades. The same effect will be produced again in 2007 in an improved version called T-232 Balloon Illusion.

Tenyo Checker Through Silk

English:
The classic illusion in which a silk passes through a stack of checkers. A stack of four checkers, alternately red and yellow, are introduced and covered with a silk. A metal tubular cover is shown and is used to cover the silk and checkers. When the cover is removed it is seen that the top two checkers have penetrated the silk with the magician showing the two below as he lifts the silk. The cover is once again placed over the checkers with silk and upon removing again it is seen that all four checkers are now above the silk! Very deceptive illusion.

It is possible to present the routine telling the story invented by U.F. Grant in 1959 of a Chinese financier, named Sing, who cornered the silk market and use Toy's magic checkers to predict the price of markets scarf . First, silk went down two points. (The cover is lifted and without any false moves, the silk is shown to be in the center with two checkers above it and two below it). Although all his financial advisors told him to buy, Sing wouldn't do it. You repeat the maneuver and the silk is shown under all four checkers. Sing Toy's magic checkers predicted silk would hit bottom at four points. Sing bought at the bottom price. Then the stock rose two points(the silk is again in the center of the stack of checkers). The advisors told him to sell, but Sing looked at his magic checkers and waited until the silk was at the top. The silk is now as it was at the beginning of the effect, and the cover is shown empty. At that point Sing sold and ever since then, Sing has been singing with joy. In fact they named one of the leading American Institutions after him... "Sing Sing."
