Here is probably one of the very first version sold by Tenyo in 1962 of classic of magic where water poured into a newspaper disappears. The trick is sold with instructions in a manila envelope on which the name of the trick and the company logo is printed (If you like Japanese oddities, take a look at this great website). A new version of this trick was later sold by Tenyo in the main collection with the Reference T-6 In The News, and Disney version is also available. 

History:

At the time it was under the brand Tianyang, not Tenyo, that "Stange Newspaper" has been marketed. Indeed, as you maybe allready know, before becoming Tenyo the company changed its name and its logo several times. In 1931 Matsutaro Yamada, the foremost professional magician of the time, who performed magic under the name "Tenyo Shokyokusai", established a Magic Research Institute in his own name and began manufacturing and selling small tricks at Tokyo's famous Mitsukoshi Department store. He is the father of Akira Yamada, Tenyo's first president, and a professional magician who performed under the stage name Tenyo Shokyokusai, The current name of the company is taken from this stage name.  At that time his company was called Tianyang Magic Institute and was intended to bring a new vision to the magic art, but it had to close temporarily in 1941 because of the pacific war. After the war, the activity could restart but sales were not very good. In fact Tenyo Shokyokusai had not much time to take care of the marketing of its magic as it was very busy with his performances and his occupation with the army. It is for this reason that his youngest son Akira Yamada took over the business in 1950. Thus, in April 1960 the company changed its name to Tianyang Magic Research Institute Ltd. Then in April 1962 the name was changed again to become Tianyang Ltd. And it's only ten years later, in 1970, that the company name became Tenyo Co Ltd. The very first magic trick were sold under the brand Tianyang and are recognizable by the logo, which was different, and which represents a black circle in which we find the letters T and Y. There are actually a large number of very old magic trick sold between 1930 and 1970, but it is quite difficult to find them and identify them in an exaustive way and in the right order. The chronology is sometimes difficult to follow because this has been a very eventful period owing to the war and the various mutations of the company.

Voici sûrement une des toutes premières versions vendues par Tenyo en 1962 de ce grand classique de la magie où de l'eau versée dans un papier journal disparait. L'effet est vendu avec sa notice dans une enveloppe kraft sur laquelle le nom du tour ainsi que le logo de l'entreprise sont imprimés (Si vous aimez les curiosités Japonaises aller voir ce superbe site internet). Histoire:

A l'époque, c'est sous la marque Tianyang et non pas Tenyo que "Stange Newspaper" a été commercialisé.  En effet, comme vous le savez peut être, avant de devenir Tenyo, l'entreprise a changé de nom et de logo de nombreuses fois. En 1931, Matsutaro Yamada commença par vendre son propre matériel de magie à Mitsukoshi Department store à Tokyo. Il était le père d'Akira Yamada (le premier président de Tenyo qui repris l'entreprise en 1950) et un magicien professionnel qui avait pour nom de scène Tenyo Shokyokusai (1888-1980). Le nom actuel de l'entreprise a été emprunté à ce nom de scène. A cette époque, sa société s’appelait Tianyang Magic Institute et avait pour but d'apporter une nouvelle vision à l'art de la magie, mais elle a dû fermer temporairement en 1941 à cause de la guerre du pacifique. Après la guerre, l'activité a pu reprendre mais les ventes n'ont pas été très satisfaisantes. En effet, Tenyo Shokyokusai  n'avait plus beaucoup de temps pour s'occuper de la commercialisation de ses tours de magie car il était très occupé par la présentation de ses spectacles et par ses occupations avec l'armée. C'est pour cette raison que son plus jeune fils fils Akira Yamada repris l'entreprise en 1950. C'est ainsi qu' en  Avril 1960 l'entreprise changea de nom pour devenir Tianyang Magic Research Institute Ltd . Puis en Avril 1962 le nom a été modifié à nouveau pour devenir plus sobrement Tianyang Ltd. C'est seulement dix ans plus tard, en 1970, que le nom de l'entreprise est devenue Tenyo Co Ltd. Les tous premiers tours de magie étaient vendus à cette époque sous la marque Tianyang et sont donc identifiables au logo qui était différent, un rond noir dans lequel on trouve les lettres T et Y. Il existe en fait un grand nombre de tours très anciens vendus entre 1930 et 1970, mais il est assez difficile de les trouver et les répertorier de manière exhaustive et dans le bon ordre. La chronologie est parfois difficile à suivre car cette période a été très mouvementée du fait de la guerre et des différentes mutations de l'entreprise.

This kind of effect is a classic that is played with four metal sticks, only one of which makes a noise when shaken. When you shake the other sticks, nothing happens, no sound is heard. However the sound will pass from a stick to another without explanation and at the end all sticks will make noise. Then, when they are shaken, some stick will make more noise than others. On other part of the routine, by taking a stick in each hand, the sound gradually fade of a stick to gradually appear in another one. Mind blowing ! At the end all sticks will be silent, and spectators will not be able to get them to make any sound. It is possible to use this props in many different ways and create a real interaction with the public, for example, sticks can be used to play a gambling game where only the magician can win. Although the principle is still the same this kind of "Rattle" trick has been adapted numerous times in many different forms, sometimes it is a single box (as in T-246 Trap Box), sometimes the magician uses 3 matchboxes, or even small bells.

Ce genre d'effet est un grand classique qui se joue avec 4 bâtonnets en métal dont un seul fait du bruit quand on le secoue.  Quand vous secouez les autres bâtonnets, il ne se passe rien, aucun son n'est émis. Pourtant le son va passer d'un bâtonnet à l'autre sans explication jusqu'à ce que tous les bâtonnets fassent du bruit. Puis certains bâtonnets feront plus de bruit que d'autres quand on les secoue. A d'autres moments, en prenant un stick dans chaque main, le son disparaitra progressivement d'un bâtonnet pour apparaitre progressivement dans un autre. Un vrai mystère. A la fin, plus aucun bâtonnet ne fera de bruit et les spectateurs seront incapables de leur faire émettre le moindre son alors que quelques secondes auparavant, ils en faisaient tous. Il est possible d'utiliser ce matériel de nombreuses manières différentes et de créer une véritable interaction avec le public, par exemple en s'en servant pour jouer une partie de bonneteau où seul le magicien pourra gagner.  Bien que le principe reste toujours le même, ce genre de tour de type "Rattle" a été adapté de nombreuses fois sous des formes très différentes; parfois il s'agit d'une boite seule (comme dans T-246 Trap Box), parfois ce sont des boites d'allumettes qui sont utilisées, ou même des petites clochettes.

The magician inserts a card into the frame. The card can be seen clearly through the glass plate at the front. The back of the frame is shown and it is set on the table. The magic words are said and the frame is turned around... the card has vanished! Again the frame is reversed and as the magician faces it to the front again, the card reappears behind the glass. The card is removed and the frame is shown empty.

History:
Card Frame is one of the oldest trick manufactured by Tenyo. This old version is made of varnished wood and dates from the early 1900s and is part of the first magic tricks sold by Tenyo. Found on the packaging box the old Tenyo logo, a black circle in which are inscribed the initials T and Y with a red "?" in the middle. All the magic of this period are made with noble materials such as wood or metal because the widespread use of plastic come much later. Tenyo also reproduced this trick years later in 1977 with the T-84 Card Frame which is this time is made of plastic.

Vous montrez un cadre vide aux spectateurs puis vous demandez à l'un d'entre eux de choisir au hasard une carte. Âpres une passe magique et en un instant une carte identique à celle du spectateur est apparue à l'intérieur du cadre qui était pourtant véritablement vide quelques secondes plus tôt. Vous retirez la carte du cadre afin de prouver que tout est normal.

Histoire:

Card Frame est l'un des plus anciens tours fabriqués par Tenyo. Cette ancienne version en bois vernis date du début des années 1900 et fait parti des tout premier tours de magie commercialisé par Tenyo. On retrouve sur la boite d'emballage l'ancien logo de Tenyo, un rond noir dans lequel sont inscrite les initiales T et Y avec un point d’interrogation rouge au milieu. Tout les tours de cette période sont fabriqués avec des matériaux nobles tel que le bois ou le métal car l'emploi généralisé du plastique arrivera bien plus tard. Tenyo ré-editera d'ailleurs ce tour des années plus tard en 1977 avec le T-84 Card Frame qui cette fois ci est fabriqué en matière plastique.

The Rabbit is a trick where the Tenyo rabbit appears, disappears and moves mysteriously. The props consists of a metal box with two slots separated from each other and covered by a flap that opens and closes. A square metal on which is printed the rabbit is placed in the left compartment and the other compartment is shown empty. The two compartment are then closed. When reopens  the rabbit is moved from one compartment to another! Withe this props it's possible to create an original routine by linking all possibles phases.

Review:

This old trick is really an interesting props at different levels for collectors. Firstly it uses in the routine the rabbit that became later the logo of Tenyo, by the way we can note that it's the first version with the rabbit smoking a cigarette. Secondly, manufacturing date to the time when the plastic was not used and the this trick has obviously been handmade. It's made of metal and all is extremely heavy weighs (several pounds). The instructions, for its part, was written by hand like all the oldest tricks of the company.

The Rabbit est un effet où le lapin de Tenyo apparait, disparait et se déplace mystérieusement. On présente une boite en métal avec deux emplacements séparés l'un de l'autre et chacun recouvert par un volets qui s'ouvrent et se referme. Un carré en métal sur lequel est imprimé le lapin est placé dans le compartiment de gauche, l'autre compartiment est montré vide. Les deux volets sont ensuite fermés. On ouvre à nouveau les volets et le lapin s'est déplacé d'un compartiment à l'autre ! Grâce à ce matériel il est possible de créer une routine à sa convenance en enchainant les phases.

Review:

Ce tour ancien est vraiment un objet intéressant à différents niveaux pour les collectionneurs. Premièrement il utilise dans sa routine elle même l'image du lapin qui est devenu le logo de Tenyo, on note d’ailleurs qu'il s'agit de la première version du logo ou le lapin fume une cigarette. Deuxièmement la fabrication date de l'époque où le plastique n’était pas encore utilisé et le matériel a visiblement été fabriqué à la main. Il est fait en métal avec les soudures apparentes, et l'ensemble pèse extrêmement lourd, plusieurs kilos. La notice quand à elle a été écrite à la main comme cela était le cas pour les tours de magie les plus anciens.

 Very Few items made by tenyo prior to 1960 survive. This magic set was made by tenyo in 1949. Measuring 6 ½ x 5 ½ x 1 ½ , this modest cardboard box held together with staples is one of the earliest surviving Japanese Magic sets. "Tenyo Magic No.1" contains seven tricks, each in its own separate cardboard box with label: "Diminishing Cards," "Cigarette Catcher," "Levitation Gimmick," Cigarettes Pull, Thimble, Thumb Tip, and "Happy Bag" (a version of "The Multiplying Corks"). A paper band originally encircled each box, keeping it's secret safely inside. Each trick comes with its own instruction sheet inside the box, usually done so different tricks can be easily substituted based upon availability. The set also comes with a large booklet that teaches 10 additional tricks using ordinary objects.

Tres peu d'objets crées par Tenyo avant 1960 on survécu. Ce set de magie à été produit par Tenyo en 1949. Mesurant 17 x 14 x 4 centimètres environs, cette modeste boite en carton maintenue avec des bouts de ruban adhésif est un des dernier set de magie Tenyo existant. "Tenyo magic No.1" contient 7 tours, chacun rangé dans sa propre petite boite séparée portant un nom: "Diminishing Cards," "Cigarette Catcher," "Levitation Gimmick," Cigarettes Pull, Thimble, Thumb Tip, et "Happy Bag" (une version de "The Multiplying Corks"). A l'origine une bande de papier entourait chaque petite boite, gardant son secret en sécurité à l'intérieur. Here is a  very old magic set, probably dating from the first half of the 1900s, which marked the beginning of Tenyo in the world of magic. This beautiful set is composed of seven separate small boxes, beautifully decorated and colored, bearing the old round Tenyo logo  with a question mark placed between the letters T and Y. You can still find this logo on diplomas that reward the winners of various competitions and magic festival organized annually by Tenyo. The Japanese manual is written in a sort of parchment and all is really neat and refined, proving once again that Tenyo always took care to produce objects and packaging quality. Regarding the content it is difficult to have a clear idea of tricks offered. We note ribbons, scarves silks,  "Tenyo Jugglery Tokyo Japan" matchboxes, a kind of Wood Paddle Trick on which we guess three small holes, maybe two magic candles for appearance... It is obvious that this magic box consisted of classic magic, manufactured in noble materials, well before the arrival of plastic.
For the story know that this old magic kit has been sold to a Japanese auction site. The starting price was to 1200JPY and six buyers try to win this collector's item. In the end this  unique little piece of history was won by the highest bidder for less than $30

Voici un set de magie extrêmement ancien, datant surement de la première moitié des années 1900 et qui marque les débuts de Tenyo dans le monde de la magie.  Ce magnifique coffret se compose de 7 petites boites séparées, finement décorées et colorées, arborant l'ancien logo rond de Tenyo avec un point d'interrogation placé entre les lettres T et Y. On retrouve encore ce logo sur les diplômes qui récompensent les gagnants des différents festivals et concours de magie organisés chaque année par Tenyo. La notice Japonaise est écrite sur une sorte de parchemin et l'ensemble est vraiment soigné et raffiné, prouvant une fois de plus que Tenyo à toujours pris soin de produire de objets et emballages de qualité. Concernant le contenu il est difficile d'avoir une idée précise des tours proposés. On remarque des rubans, des foulards de soie, des boites d'allumettes signée "Tenyo Jugglery Tokyo Japan", une sorte de Paddle Trick en bois sur lequel on devine trois petits trous, peut être deux bougies à apparition... Il est évident que ce coffret devait proposer aux acheteurs d'apprendre des classiques de la magie, fabriqués dans des matériaux nobles, bien avant l'arrivé du plastique.

Pour la petite histoire sachez que ce coffret a été mis en vente sur un site d'enchère Japonais. Le prix de départ était de 1200 JPY et six acheteurs ont enchéri pour essayer de le gagner. Au final ce petit bout d'histoire unique a été remporté par le meilleur enchérisseur pour moins de 30$.

 Here is a set of very rare magic tricks sold in Japan by Tenyo before the Pacific War in 1941. At this time the plastic did not exist and all the magic tricks were made with wood, metal or paper. Each trick was packaged in a pretty little colored cardboard box on which a rectangle of paper, with the name of the effect, was pasted. The box was then wrapped in tissue paper and two round stickers, one representing the old Tenyo logo and the other on which are inscribed "made​in Japan", are used to seal the package. Among these tricks include classics like a fake thumb made out of metal.

Voici un ensemble de tours de magie très rares vendu au Japon par Tenyo avant la guerre du pacifique en 1941. A cette époque le plastique n'existait pas encore et tout les tours de magie étaient fabriqués avec des matériaux nobles comme le bois, le métal ou le papier. Chaque tour était emballé dans une jolie petite boite en carton coloré sur laquelle un rectangle de papier indiquant le nom de l'effet était collé. La boite était ensuite emballée dans un papier de soie et deux stickers ronds, l'un représentant l'ancien logo de Tenyo et l'autre sur lequel sont inscrit made in Japan, sont utilisés pour sceller l'emballage.  Parmi ces tours on retrouve des classiques comme un faux pouce en métal.
